Marine Mammal Observer
Job Duties
Detect, observe, record, and notify work crews of marine mammal activities, including whales, porpoises, seals, sea otters, and sea lions. This position is responsible for reporting and mitigating construction field work’s impacts on marine mammals to uphold all related wildlife protection regulations. This role includes using binoculars to monitor marine mammals and other fauna and documenting data on sightings and behavior on computers in the field.
- Ability to work as part of a team and respectfully communicate to personnel, contractors, and residents.
- Ability to work early morning or evening shifts, as well as days, weekends and holidays.
- Good judgment and problem-solving skills.
- Work in a safe and responsible manner.
- Pre-employment drug & alcohol screening and/or random drug screen.
- Pre-employment criminal background history check and no felonies.
- Ability to work inside and outside in conditions of both hot and cold temperatures and may be exposed to odors, dust, mechanical hazards, high noise levels, and potentially dangerous equipment and materials.
- Ability to bend, reach, lift and carry up to 50 lbs.
- Ability to detect and identify marine mammals at the water’s surface and use equipment (including binoculars and theodolites) to correctly identify the marine mammal species and direction of travel (training and equipment provided).
- Comfortable with transportation by truck, helicopter, airplane, or boat.
- Successful completion of provided training.

Preferred Experience

Previous wildlife guiding or fishing experience.

Biological science academic experience or local environmental knowledge.

Cultural Resource Monitor
This position assists the Site Archaeologist with the basic protocols and responsibilities for the cultural resource monitoring and unanticipated discovery and inadvertent discovery plans for the Project. These procedures are to be used if intact cultural material or materials determined culturally significant are discovered or impacted during construction and/or ground disturbing activities associated with the Project. This position is critical during earth-disturbing activities.

Protected Species Observer
Key Functions
- Be able to collect field observations and record field data accurately and in accordance with project protocols and provide an understandable summary of those observations;
- Be able to identify protected species that occur in the action area at a distance equal to the outer edge of the shutdown zone;
- Record the date, time, species, and coordinates of all observed marine mammals. Required equipment will be provided by Kootznoowoo.
- Have instruments that allow them to estimate geographic coordinates of observed marine mammals.
- Possess a legible copy of this LOC, all project mitigation measures, and all other permit appendices, as applicable.
- Possess legible and fillable observation record forms allowing for data entry.
- Prior to commencing in-water work or at changes in watch, MIMs will establish a point of contact with the construction crew. The MIM or MIMs will brief the point of contact as to the shutdown procedures should the MIM observe a listed species that is likely to enter or within the shutdown zone, and will request that the point of contact instruct the crew to notify the MIM when a marine mammal is observed. If the point of contact goes “off shift” and delegates his duties, the MIM must be informed and brief the new point of contact.
